It's a great month to ....

There’s something magical about December in Cairns. It’s that time of year when all the business and bustle winds down and the fun begins. The whole city seems to switch happily into holiday-mode and embrace the month of festive cheer ahead.

December is all about celebrating the end of the year in style – and whether that means getting outdoors on an amazing adventure or simply lazing under the warm tropical sun with cocktail in hand, Cairns has got you covered.

When it comes to epic outdoor adventures, Cairns is quite literally your oyster. Boasting everything from iconic natural wonders and cascading, dream-like waterfalls, to ancient rainforests and incredible underwater worlds, the Tropical North is treasure trove just waiting to be explored.

The weather in Cairns during December can pack a fair bit of heat, and there’s no better way to combat the heady humidity than by getting out on the water. Of course, no trip to Far North Queensland is complete without a day on our stunning Great Barrier Reef. Dive into an underwater world full of colourful coral and sea life as you snorkel the surface or scuba dive into the depths. For those who prefer to stay dry, a glass bottom boat ride will give you an incredible glimpse into the vibrant reef below.

We all know you can snorkel on the reef, but did you know you can also snorkel in the rainforest? Yes, you read that correctly – Back Country Bliss offer rainforest river snorkelling tours where you get the chance to explore the crisp, clear water of the Mossman River and spot its unique residents including fish, turtles and even the elusive platypus.

In Cairns, there’s just as much fun to be had above the water’s surface as there is below with a huge line-up of water sports on offer. From white water rafting, river tubing and jet boating, to SUP boarding, kayaking and banana boats, there’s a water activity to suit every age and every thrill level.

While the ocean here may be beautiful, Cairns is also surrounded by a number of jaw-dropping waterfalls that provide the perfect haven for escaping the heat and cooling off with a refreshing dip in the lagoon. Millaa Millaa Falls, found on the Waterfall Circuit in the Atherton Tablelands, is arguably the most famous and most picturesque waterfall in the region. However, the popular Crystal Cascades with its hidden Fairy Falls or the playful Josephine Falls certainly do not disappoint either.

December is indisputably synonymous with celebrating – it’s the end of the work and school year, the Christmas spirit is in full swing and the New Year is just around the corner. From family friendly fun to lively nights out, there’s plenty of ways to celebrate the end of the year in Cairns.

If you’re feeling festive, Cairns’ annual Carols By Candlelight will be held on December 8 at Fogarty Park. Bring a picnic rug and your best singing voice and get ready to belt out all of your favourite Christmas hits with the crowd.

Ready to let your hair down on a much-deserved night out? Be sure to check out Salt House for sun-kissed afternoon drinks before heading to The Conservatory Bar or Three Wolves for creative cocktails or Hemingway’s Brewery for a tasty selection of craft beers. If you really want to kick the night into top gear, break out your best moves on the dance floor at The Woolshed or the famous backpacker nightclub Gilligans.

Is it 2020 already?! Ring in the New Year at Moku Beach Club with a poolside BBQ, fabulous cocktail specials, PIMMS bar, lawn games and pool floaties galore.

If there’s one quote that sums up December in Cairns perfectly, it’s “Eat, drink and be merry.” During the festive season, a little indulgence is not just acceptable, but encouraged! After all, diets don’t exist in December, right?

For a local foodie fave, be sure to check out Rusty’s Markets. Sample some of the fine local produce, have a yarn with a local farmer and treat your tastebuds to some of our region’s exotic tropical fruit.

Christmas in Australia just wouldn’t be the same without a bounty of fresh seafood, and luckily, Cairns is famous for it. Enjoy your very own seafood feast on Christmas Day at Novotel Cairns Oasis, serving up some delicious lunch, dinner and poolside dining events. Bookings are essential, so get in early to secure your spot.

While there are so many things to do in Cairns, don’t forget to give yourself a little time to simply sit back, relax and reflect on the year that was.

I think we can all agree that palm trees, sunshine and sandy shores are the pinnacle of relaxation, and nobody does chilled-out island vibes quite like Palm Cove. Stroll the palm-lined boardwalk, get your token Insta-shot and then get your tooshie firmly planted on the sand for a few hours of pure beach-side bliss. After you’ve sufficiently dosed up on vitamin-D, you can check out Palm Cove’s array of cute little cafes, restaurants and boutique shops.

But, if you’re too relaxed to even leave the resort – don’t worry! You can stake out your own little slice of paradise poolside at our very own Moku Beach Club. Oh, and did we mention MOKU is home to Cairns only swim-up bar? Top that off with a delish menu of share-plates, crafty cocktails and ice-cold beers, and you’ve got yourself the ideal summer sanctuary.

End the year in tropical paradise at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort and take advantage of our Endless Summer Offer! Stay for 3 nights and receive a complimentary breakfast for two, dinner for two (main meal) at MOKU Bar + Grill, complimentary parking and a bottle of wine on arrival.
