From the sweet to the savoury, the healthy to the indulgent, these trendy little bowls have quickly become a foodie favourite in Cairns. Not only do they make for a great on-the-go brekky or quick lunch, the healthier varieties are usually nutrient-rich, and packed full of protein, fresh ingredients, and super foods – Oh, and did we mention they are totally Insta-worthy too?!
Even if you haven’t tried an açaí bowl, there’s no doubt you would have at least heard of these pretty little purple power bowls. Pronounced “ah-sah-EE”, the açaí berry hails from Brazil and has long been considered a super food due to its high levels of antioxidants, fiber, protein and heart healthy fats.
One of the best things about açaí bowls is that you can easily make your own at home! Thanks to its rapid rise in popularity over the last few years, açaí powder is readily available in most health food stores or online.
There’s no guesswork here, Smoothie Bowls are pretty much exactly as they sound – a smoothie in a bowl, but with the added bonus of fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, granola or whatever else your heart desires sprinkled on top. Similar to an açaí bowl, and more imaginative than your average smoothie, the humble smoothie bowl will always make for a drool-worthy brekkie option.
Pronounced “po-kay”, poké bowls originate from Hawaii and the traditional version involves raw, marinated fish (usually Ahi tuna) tossed over rice, green onions, seaweed, soy sauce and sesame oil. Ever since poké made its way to Australian shores, we have seen many different evolutions of the classic, with cooked fish, chicken, tofu, vegetables and fruit all making an appearance.
Nourish Bowls, Buddha Bowls, Power Bowls, Macro Bowls… these go by many names, but essentially they are all just a big ol’ bowl of healthy, natural, fresh, super-food-y goodness that will make your insides feel all shiny and new. Nourish Bowls are generally built on a leafy green or grain base, then topped with lean meat or plant-based protein, vegetables, healthy fats such as seeds, nuts, avocado or tahini, and a fresh dressing. Colourful and crunchy, Nourish Bowls are the perfect all-rounder meal in a bowl.
