How to Prepare for the 7 Cairns Marathon 2019

Put on your running shoes and start stretching, because it’s time to get ready for the inaugural 7 Cairns Marathon and Community Run Festival 2019.

Almost 4000 athletes from all over Australia and the world are expected to hit Cairns over the weekend of 26th to 28th April to compete in the marathon and enjoy the festivities surrounding the event.

If you’ve already registered, are thinking about competing, or just want to get involved in the fun, here are a few of our top tips on preparing for the 7 Cairns Marathon.

REGISTER NOW
The event is just over a month away, so if you haven’t registered, get in quick! If you’re a beginner, entering a marathon can seem pretty daunting – fortunately, the 7 Cairns Marathon and Community Run Festival has a range of events for all ages and all levels. The 7CM 2019 events range from the 2km Ronald McDonald House Charities Family Dash, all the way up to the 42km Channel 7 Marathon.

 

HAVE A TRAINING PLAN
Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a seasoned marathon runner, it’s crucial to have a proper training plan to prep your body and mind for the big day. Before you begin, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor to make sure you’re ready to undertake an extensive training program. When it comes to finding the right plan for you and your goals, the 7 Cairns Marathon organisers have released a number of training guides to get you ready to pound the pavement.


ALLOW FOR POST-TRAVEL RECOVERY TIME
If you’re travelling to Cairns from interstate or overseas for this event, it’s important to allow yourself enough time to recover after your long flight or drive. Stretching plays a very important part in the body’s recovery process, especially after long periods of sitting, so make sure you fit in a quick stretch session or some yoga once you arrive. It’s always a good idea to plan your arrival in Cairns a few days before the marathon, so your body has plenty of time to recover back to its top form. You definitely don’t want to be rushing straight from the airport to the starting line!


BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION EARLY
With almost 4000 people expected to arrive in Cairns for this event, you’ll want to make sure you lock in your accommodation ASAP so you don’t miss out! KEEP YOUR HEALTH & FITNESS ROUTINE ON TRACK

FUEL UP FOR THE RACE
Having a marathon nutrition plan is just as important as a having training plan. Trying to find healthy options when you’re away from home can be tricky, but Novotel’s ‘Healthy Choices’ menu will ensure you can easily find nutritious meal options, right within your hotel. The night before the race, opt for a healthy, balanced meal, high in carbohydrates like pasta, rice or potato. Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking mostly water, avoid foods high in salt and fibre, and of course, no alcohol. On the morning of the race, eat a small nutritious breakfast, like oatmeal with banana, and allow plenty of time for digestion before you hit the starting line.
