2018 is Chinese year of the Dog! Every year is aligned with the zodiac cycle with each animal reoccurring every 12 years, in Chinese tradition the numbers 3,4 and 9 are going to be your lucky numbers during the year of the dog. Expect to see red, purple and green decorations across Cairns which are the lucky colours for the year of the dog. If you’re looking to purchase flowers for your loved ones, a choice of Roses, Orchid and Cymbidium connotes wish of good luck and health.

New Year Day Celebrations

On Friday, February 16, join thousands of ecstatic celebrants as they collectively bid farewell to the year of the Rooster and usher in the year of the Dog. Do not miss any of the awesome Chinese troupe performances that are sure to keep you mesmerized and enthralled. This event is free and holds at the Cairns Esplanade, Lagoon Plaza. Be sure not to miss the symbolic fireworks display that signs off the celebrations while also preventing bad luck. Event begins at 6:30PM


1. Hailey Gillespie Art Exhibition- 12 Zodiacs

Fascinated with astrology? Witness a powerful presentation on the zodiacs. This is a tasteful blend of Western and Eastern cultures, resulting in this masterpiece exhibition of multicultural zodiac animals by Hailey Gillespie. Entry into Cairns Aquarium is free for the duration of the Exhibit. The art exhibition is open from 7th to the 23rd of February from 9am-8pm and then from 24th February to the 3rd of March, the exhibition runs from 9am-5pm. Be sure to get their early as entry is closed an hour before the Art Exhibition starts.


2. Best Friend Exhibition: Yixuan Ruan, Hayley Gillespie and Stephanie Holt

Experience this quirky and fun exhibit, celebrating man’s best friend across western and Chinese cultures. See paintings and portraits of dogs, telling tales from their own perspective and point of view. Pictures of dogs just being adorable and cute are also guaranteed to make your day much brighter. The Best Friend Exhibition features three local artists with their individual brand of culturally diverse art. The exhibit holds at Reef Casino on February 8 at 9am and March 4, beginning at 5pm. Entry is free


3. Shaolin Chinese Junk Tours

Ever wanted to know what it feels like to be on a Chinese cruise vessel or Shaolin? This is your chance to experience a ride of a lifetime. Sail through Cairns on a harbour cruise, as you take in the delightful commentary on the beautiful landscape in view. Visit the Trinity Inlet to book a ride to remember- tickets are $50 per person and the Cruise lasts for up to 4 hours, giving you a detailed view of the Cairns' stunning mangroves and mountaintops.
