We had interconnecting rooms and what a gift they were because it gave me something every mother-of-three needs on holiday, quiet time! Not that I got much of that, but it meant there were two living spaces, two bathrooms and two fridges that we packed to help keep our food bill down.
There are no cooking facilities which is great because it means there’s no way I could be made to can whip up a meal while I was on holiday. We kept scurvy at bay by visiting the iconic Rusty’s Markets the day after we arrived. Packed with the freshest fruit and vegetables Far North Queensland has to offer, it’s a hive of activity. We also scored some second-hand books and some tasty sweets.
With rooms that are serviced daily (what a treat), this resort is ideally located one street back from Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon; a 4800sq m salt-water swimming facility that’s open year round. And five minutes down the boardwalk is the popular Muddy’s; a splash playground and parkland that’s shaded and has toilets, a cafe and picnic tables.
The resort offers underground parking for a fee but you can always score plenty of free spots on the street, just keep an eye out for time limits during the day. The coin-operated laundry is not a cheap option so I’d suggest packing more and make the kids wear clothes more than once.
Babysitting is available on request, there’s a tour desk to help you plan your day and while we didn’t get room service, it’s available 24/7. If you’re part Le Club AccorHotels member like we are, you’ll also be treated to a few perks, including cheaper parking and a free drink or two.
Next to the bar (how smart) is a kid’s area where they can use a large interactive touch screen to play games together or individually. Just be warned they’ll race to get there and then probably fight over it because it’s so much fun. My daughter loved the KAPLA wood set and also discovered books to read.
After day trips, including a journey on the Kuranda Scenic Railway and visiting the reef on Sunlover’s new kid-friendly pontoon, it was the best feeling knowing beds would be made and we didn’t have to go out for dinner if we didn’t want to. The Novotel Cairns Oasis is a perfect hotel for families who prefer a little indulgence while on holiday and a lot of convenience.
