Our Sustainability Commitment

Here at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, we are committed to making a positive impact on the environment and our community. We believe that sustainability is not just a choice but a responsibility, and we are dedicated to integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations. Our goal is to provide our guests with an eco-friendly and responsible stay while preserving the beauty of our planet for future generations.

Our Sustainability Pillars

  1. Tropical Rainforest Setting: Novotel Cairns Oasis is situated amidst the lush tropical rainforests of Yidinjdji Country, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region. The resort is committed to preserving this unique ecosystem through sustainable practices.
  2. Sustainable Practices: Novotel Cairns Oasis is dedicated to minimising its environmental footprint. It reduces waste through recycling and in the future composting programs and uses energy-efficient technologies to conserve resources.
  3. Local Farm-to-Table Cuisine: The resort's restaurants prioritise locally sourced, organic ingredients to reduce food miles and support local farmers.
  4. Eco-Adventure Activities: The resort offers a range of eco-adventure activities via the tour desk in the lobby, such as guided hikes, bird-watching tours, and snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef. These experiences educate visitors about the importance of preserving this fragile ecosystem.

Our Cultural Pillars:

  1. First Nations Engagement: Novotel Cairns Oasis actively engages with the Yidinjdji community, offering cultural workshops and presentations. Guests have the opportunity to learn about the rich history, traditions, and art of the local First Nations people.
  2. Art and Craft: The resort showcases First Nations art and crafts in its decor during CIAF in Cairns. This provides an authentic glimpse into the region's cultural heritage.
  3. Cultural Performances: Regular cultural performances during school holidays, such as dance and music, are organised to entertain and educate guests about the First Nations culture. These performances often feature traditional storytelling and dreamtime narratives.
  4. Respectful Tourism: The resort promotes responsible tourism, encouraging guests to respect First Nations customs and traditions.

Novotel Cairns Oasis is not only a luxurious getaway but also a gateway to the rich cultural and environmental heritage of Yidinjdji Country. It offers an immersive experience that allows guests to appreciate the beauty of the region while fostering a deeper understanding and respect for its Indigenous culture and fragile ecosystem.

Our Achievements

  • $5,000 - from the ALL Heartist Fund to provide services to support victims of domestic violence.
  • Promotion of eco-friendly local tours and activities, available to be booked through our on-site tour desk.
  • Our housekeeping and the pool bar team have collected and donated over 5,000 bottles and cans to Containers for Change, with our first $500 donation going to Reef Restoration.
  • As part of our initiative to reduce single-use plastics throughout the entire guest experience, we have made a significant decision to eliminate single-use dry amenities, taking a bold step towards a plastic-free environment. We understand the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. By removing single-use plastic amenities such as toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps from our guest rooms, we are significantly reducing our environmental footprint. We have also made a noteworthy change to incorporate large format amenities including body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, thereby resulting in a waste reduction of almost 50%.
  • We have teamed up with Vendella to help us replace our current pillows with microfibre Vendella 'DreamGreen' pillows that are made entirely of recycled plastic bottles whilst maintaining the highest quality pillow for guest comfort, so for Novotel Cairns has saved 4085 plastic bottles.
  • Alcoholic spirits used in our onsite bars are all refilled using the eco spirits service, 1 x eco tote refill provides 4.5L of product. For every tote purchased 1 tree is planted.
  • As a part of our commitment to a sustainable future, Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort recognises the importance of community and ensuring we source locally when possible. Our current local suppliers include: Angelo’s Fine Foods, Gallo Diary land, Solano’s Syrups, Mungalli Creek Dairy, Carnivore QLD Pty Ltd, Davis Milk & NQ Promoworks.
  • Refillable water stations for guest in all food & beverage outlets
  • In room educational materials promoting towel & bedding reuse, as well as guidance on responsible use of amenities.

Future Initiatives

We are continuously working to enhance our sustainability efforts. Our future initiatives include a reintroduction of our partnership with Containers for Change - we will utilise this program to offset our carbon footprint, as well as the implementation of various efforts to measure and reduce food waste. We are always looking for ways to include our guests on this journey as we know the only way towards a positive future is together! With this in mind, we are currently working on the development of a guests guide to a sustainable stay at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, that will be accessible through our digital compendium. We look forward to sharing our progress with you.

By choosing to stay with us, you are not only enjoying a relaxing getaway in the beautiful Tropical North Queensland but also supporting our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future. Thank you for joining us on this journey towards a better world.
