Keeping the kids busy during the April school holidays

Finally! The April school holidays are upon us. After 10 weeks of early mornings, traffic jams, packed lunches and homework, it’s time for the whole family to enjoy a well-deserved break.

While taking the family on holiday sounds relaxing, sometimes travelling with kids can require a lot more effort than we bargain for. Fortunately, Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort has made keeping the kids busy (and the parents relaxed!) on school holidays easier than ever.

Here are our top tips for travelling with kids these school holidays…

Some parents may see the school holidays as less of a relaxing break, and more of an endless battle in keeping the kids entertained. That’s why Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort created the daily Resortology Program, which offers kids activities at the resort every day of the week.

From face painting with Tjapukai, cooking classes, learning how to snorkel in the pool with Pro Dive, to the ultimate water pistol wars, there’s an activity to suit everyone. Your kids will be having so much fun, we guarantee you won’t hear the dreaded “I’m boooored!” once!

Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort provides a totally child-friendly environment for your getaway. Your kids will love splashing around in the lagoon pool while you enjoy a well-earned holiday cocktail at the swim-up bar. There’s also a dedicated kid’s play area, babysitting on-request, and kids under 12 eat breakfast free when dining with an adult.

Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort is set in an ideal location, just one street back from the Cairns Esplanade, so there are plenty of child-friendly attractions nearby, including the new Cairns Aquarium which is right next door! A short stroll down the Esplanade Boardwalk will bring you to the family favourite, Muddy’s splash playground.

No holiday to Cairns would be complete without visiting our breathtaking Great Barrier Reef, and it’s a truly unforgettable experience to share with your kids. Reef tours run daily from Cairns, and our helpful Tour Desk can advise the best child-friendly tours for your family.

Taking a day trip to the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest is an absolute must on your family holiday. There are many ways to explore this ancient beauty, but whooshing through the canopy on a Jungle Surfing zipline tour is a definite winner among kids!

Cairns is also surrounded by a bounty of lush rainforest walks and natural swimming holes, which always make for great kid-friendly activities. However, if you know your kids get bored easily when it comes to walking, try to turn your rainforest hike into a game. Have a prize for them to spot wildlife or find the first waterfall, helping them to become less focused on the walking, and more focused on the adventure.

Remember, if you’re travelling with kids – especially little ones – you need to factor in that this big adventure for you is EVEN bigger for them. So, when planning your daily itinerary, don’t try to cram too much in or you’ll just end up with overwhelmed, over-tired, grumpy kiddos. Spacing out your full-on tour days with easy rest days by the lagoon will ensure both kids and parents get the most out of every experience.

After a jam-packed day full of adventures, heading back to your hotel room to enjoy some downtime is very much needed. However, when you’ve got a couple of excited kids in tow, relaxation does not seem to come so easily – this is where preparation is key!

Once you get back to your hotel room and put your feet up, it won’t be long before you hear every kid’s classic catchcry: “I’m huuuungry!” Be sure to bring a few little snacks in your suitcase for these exact moments, saving yourself a trip to nearest supermarket. If you don’t have emergency snacks on hand, never fear – Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort has got you covered with 24-hour room service.

To ensure you get some quiet time in your hotel room, remember to pack some of the quieter toys your kids enjoy playing with at home, such as colouring-in, play dough, books, or the trusty iPad with headphones. And, of course, don’t forget to pack your child’s special cuddly toy to make bedtime a breeze!
